Start With the Basics

playing pokerEvery master was once a beginner. And the first step to becoming a poker pro is understanding the basics of the game. Poker is typically played with a standard 52-card deck. The Ace is the highest card, and the Two is the lowest. However, some poker variants use different decks or add Jokers into the mix.

Betting in Poker

In poker, there are two types of bets: the small bet and the big bet. The small bet is usually half of the big bet. For example, in a $20/$40 game, the small bet would be $20, and the big bet would be $40.

The first round of betting starts with the player to the left of the dealer (in online poker, the player to the left of the dealer is the one with the small blind). This player can either call (match the big bet), raise (increase the bet) or fold (give up their hand and their chips).

If this first player folds, they are out for that hand. If they call, they stay in the game, and the next player to the left must make a decision. This pattern continues until all players have either folded or called.

If someone raises, the next player has three options: call (match the bet), raise (increase the bet) or fold.

The betting round continues until all players have either called or folded.

Once the betting round is over, it’s time for the next phase of the game: The Draw.

The Draw

pokerThe draw is when players can trade in cards from their hands to try and improve their chances of winning. How many cards a player can trade in depends on the game. For example, in Five-Card Draw, each player can trade in up to three cards.

The final betting round begins once all the players have traded in their cards (or chosen not to). The same rules apply as the first round of betting, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.

The Showdown

The showdown is the final moment when every hand gets unveiled, and the player with the best hand wins the entire thing (the money in the middle of the table). In case of a tie, the pot is split evenly between the players with the best hand.

Now that you know all of this, it’s time to play poker and win some money.
